MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View

The Taj Lake Palace floats on the calm surface of Lake Pichola and was built in 1740 as a summer retreat, taking advantage of the cooling lake breezes. The Taj group took over in the Sixties, and the hotel has since become standard postcard (and Bond film) material.

The standard rooms face inward, overlooking the courtyard and its lily pond; not a bad view in itself, but the slightly better rooms face outward. Many suites have private balconies, and all rooms and suites are quite modern, despite the old-fashioned and opulent décor, with central air conditioning and satellite television. This is, after all, a Taj hotel, and though the location is unconventional and wonderfully secluded, it is a world-class luxury hotel.

Dining and drinking options are plentiful within the hotel, with room service and the café available 24 hours a day. This is still the sort of place which is perfect for a romantic getaway, or just a respite from the hustle and bustle of city life, with a picturesque backdrop and flawless old-world service.

How to get there: Taj Lake Palace is a 40-minute drive from Udaipur Airport.
