MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View

Sometimes a hotel’s address says a lot. Matachica’s, officially, is “5 Miles North of San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize.” Suffice it to say that they don’t have a problem with traffic noise. Set along a secluded white sand beach and reachable only by motorboat, this is a hotel that’s all about disconnecting from the outside world — its colorful thatch-roofed casitas and cabanas are technology-free (air conditioning aside).

A large-scale redesign in 2019 at the hands of designers Byron and Dexter Peart leaves Matachica’s interiors looking refreshed, blending rustic handmade textures with a bold, graphic sensibility — the unplugged life is certainly not a dull one. The tactile comforts are top-shelf, and the fully renovated bathrooms count Ceramica Suro sinks and eco-luxe Haeckels bath products among their charms.

The best of the accommodations are set a stone’s throw from the surf, though even from the most distant casitas, it’s only a minute’s walk across the warm white sand until you’re at the water’s edge. At every level, the accommodations come with their own private patios strung with hammocks, for when stepping out the door onto the beach just seems too arduous a path to relaxation.

Things can get a bit more strenuous if you wish, but only by degrees. The staff will gladly set you up with sea kayaks, snorkel gear, a pedal boat or bike — all free to use. And off-site there are jungles and caves and Mayan ruins to explore. Best of all, the world’s second-largest barrier reef is just offshore — an unspoiled diver’s paradise, in a setting where the effect isn’t undone once you step back on shore.

Matachica’s restaurant, Mambo, is worth mentioning as well —  ingredients are sourced from the organic garden at Matachica’s sister property, GAÏA Riverlodge. For cocktails and light bites, the renovation also bears new fruit in the form of Danny’s Tree Bar, set right on the beach against the backdrop of the Caribbean Sea.
