Picture your dream hotel on the beach in Bali. Chances are, you’re not imagining a large red-brick building that soars higher than the tree line. Indeed, Potato Head Suites, a 58-room hotel on Petitenget Beach, turns the old standard on its head. Unconventional as it is, it’s practically right on the sand, with a fabulous pool and an open-air cocktail bar straight out of your vacation fantasies. Designed and built almost entirely by local artisans, the interiors rounded out with a lovely collection of mid-century furniture, Potato Head Suites is an architectural showpiece, an ode to Indonesian artistry.
Suites, for instance, feature locally crafted teak furniture and naturally dyed, artisan-made bath robes, plus the Thonet No B9 Chair by Le Corbusier and a pair of vintage lamps (the Pendant lamp ph5 1958 by Louis Poulsen and the Lampe Gras 1921 by Bernard- Albin Gras, in case you know a thing or two about 20th-century French industrial design.)
But not to grandstand too much about the hotel’s design cred. When it comes to space, comfort, and modern amenities, Potato Head Suites' got the goods, as well: each suite features a king-sized bed and a daybed, a separate living area, custom-made organic bath products, and a private terrace furnished with a second daybed. You’ll be more than happy to lay around at Potato Head Suites, especially after you discover the in-room minibar. This isn’t your garden-variety shelf of mini vodka bottles and chocolate bars: it’s a craft cocktail station complete with infused spirits, ice well, bespoke bar equipment, and a recipe book written by Potato Head Suites' head mixologist.
Head down to Akademi, the lobby bar, to watch him in action. Potato Head Suites guests also have special access to the wildly popular Potato Head Beach Bar next door. Ask the staff to book you a table, or better yet, a daybed. If it’s a simple stroll or swim you’re after, the beach is just steps away. And even if the airline lost your suitcase, you’ll be ready to hit the sand: every suite comes with a tropical beach set including a traditional sarong, rattan bag and hat. All told, it’s a fresh take on the island getaway.
