A few minutes’ drive down the southern shore of the lake from Zürich is the Swiss town of Thalwil, a bedroom community that’s home to Alex, a residential-style luxury boutique hotel from the British Campbell Gray Hotels. It’s set in a quietly stylish modernist building right on the lakeside, where its boat unloads travelers direct from Zürich proper. The rooms are big and beautiful, in a soothingly warm quasi-minimalist style, and the public spaces are generous and refined — including the eponymous Alex Restaurant and its neighboring Alex Bar, both with front-row views of lovely Lake Zürich.
