As Caribbean destinations go, Anguilla is relatively quiet. That’s especially true of the East End, also known as Shoal Bay East, where Zemi Beach House Resort & Spa opened in 2016 as the area’s first luxury resort. And what a kick-off it was: here’s hoping it’s a sign of things to come — but not too soon. As the name suggests, Zemi is a beach house-style boutique resort. It’s rather intimate in size, and embodies a certain kind of casual seaside elegance that you’d more likely find at a stylish friend’s vacation home than at a conventional resort.
The property isn’t huge, just six oceanfront acres fringed with palm trees and tropical foliage. A striking infinity pool, flanked with chaises longues angled towards the ocean, is strategically placed to create the illusion that the turquoise waters of the sea and the pool are one. You’ll enjoy the same uninterrupted view of the ocean from your guest room or suite, all featuring private terraces with outdoor furniture. The decor is just what you’d want in a place as naturally beautiful as this: simple but sophisticated, with blonde wood furnishings, crisp white linens, dark wood shutters, smooth tile floors, and plush chairs and sofas upholstered with organic fabrics. Standard amenities include minibars stocked with local treats, bath products by Malin + Goetz, and free wi-fi.
You’d bet that the seafood’s good here, and you’d be correct: freshly caught fish is the basis for Zemi Beach House’s seasonal menus. After dinner, head to the Rhum Room to sample small-batch rums and consider the next day’s activities. Excellent snorkeling and hiking excursions are easily arranged through the hotel, ideally followed up by a deep tissue massage at Zemi’s Thai-style spa. Or you could just go for a stroll down a white sand beach that’s still blissfully unpopulated. We’re happy there’s now a good hotel on this quiet side of the island. But maybe one is enough for now.
