Some Alpine chalet hotels stick with determination to the traditional style of a century or more ago; others throw out everything except the mountain views and the peaked roof and upend your expectations with avant-garde design. Alpina, in the Haute-Savoie town of Les Gets, charts a middle path. The mountain-lodge silhouette remains intact, as do the familiar tropes of French Alpine hospitality design: pine paneling, red upholstery, and a pervasive atmosphere of rustic coziness. But all of it has been updated for boutique-savvy 21st-century travelers — this is a hotel with history, but not a historical re-creation.

A location at the heart of the village, and close to the ski lifts, is a large part of Alpina’s appeal. Its rooms range from cozy-but-comfortable singles all the way up to quadruple rooms, plus expansive suites and flexible options for interconnecting accommodations. The relaxation area features an indoor pool, a jacuzzi, a sauna, and a steam shower, and there’s a playroom suited for multiple ages featuring everything from wooden toys to arcade games. Meanwhile the restaurant, Oxalis, serves refined local classics, while the Fireside lounge is ideal for après-ski (or après-hike).
