Contemporary Classic & Quiet
The comparatively undertraveled Catalan Pyrenees are home to some spectacular vistas, some charmingly picturesque villages, and more than a few utterly unique hotels. One of them, the Mercer Torre del Remei, is an early 20th-century modernist mansion with an air of expressionism about it, set in the village of Bolvir, in the region of La Cerdanya, just outside the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park.

It’s undergone a thorough restoration, bringing its functional elements up to 21st-century standards without sacrificing any of its century-old character. Rooms are split between the 1910 palace building and what were once the stables, but all are spacious and sunlit, some of them double-height beneath timbered ceilings, others tucked under the eaves, many of them looking out at the mountains and the hotel’s verdant grounds.

In this part of the world, gastronomy is taken very seriously indeed, and Mercer Torre del Remei enticed chef Carles Gaig to move his operation from Barcelona to La Cerdanya. Restaurant Gaig is now, quite rightfully, one of the hotel’s greatest strengths, serving everything from a hearty breakfast to a refined tasting menu made from the best of the region’s fresh ingredients and produce.
