Set on 12 acres of gardens, it contains enough Tudor and Georgian details to keep an architectural historian busy for days, along with an unpretentious atmosphere that makes it rather more welcoming than its imposing silhouette might suggest.
Rooms and suites are divided between the original house and its former stables; all are handsomely styled, in keeping with the house’s public spaces, while the comforts are appealingly modern (and include underfloor heating). A bar and terrace serve more casual all-day fare, while the Lavender Restaurant plays the role of manor-house dining room with aplomb.
