MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View

Bhutan is one of the world’s most unique destinations, and the Six Senses Bhutan is not just a single luxury hotel, but five of them, each one in a different location, with a different landscape and a different aesthetic: Bumthang in the forest, Gangtey for a bird’s-eye-view, Punakha for a pastoral, agricultural atmosphere, Thimphu for hilltop views of the capital, and Paro for an impressive re-creation of the ancient stonework of the nearby monasteries.

What they all have in common is what all of the Six Senses hotels around the world have in common: interiors that are contemporary yet clearly influenced by local traditions; comforts that are first-rate but substantial rather than ostentatious; experiences that make the most of the local landscapes and cultures. Accommodations range from expansive suites within each lodge building to freestanding one, two, and three-bedroom villas — privacy, it’s safe to say, is in plentiful supply.

Each of the five lodges also comes with its own typically elaborate Six Senses spa, whose offerings are similarly tailored to the local culture. And you don’t come all the way to the Himalayas to stay in all day, tempting though it may be; each lodge has access to a different set of outdoor activities and cultural experiences.

Important Information about traveling to Bhutan: The Kingdom of Bhutan requires every foreign national (except Indian nationals) to pay a Daily Government Royalty of $65 USD per person, per day and an FIT (“Free Independent Traveler”) surcharge of $40 per day for single travelers and $30 USD per person, per day otherwise. Additionally, foreign nationals (except Indian nationals) are required to pay a non-refundable visa fee of $40 USD per application (one name per application), and a $10 USD Tourism Development Fund fee. It takes 2–3 weeks to complete the visa formalities.
