Contemporary Classic & Lively
Paris already has so many extraordinary hotels that it’s downright shocking when another one opens. Le Damantin Hotel & Spa occupies a stunning red-brick 19th-century Louis XIII–style mansion on a corner overlooking the Right Bank of the Seine, and its recent conversion from a private house into a high-end boutique hotel is a substantial boon to the Parisian hospitality scene.

The rooms and suites are contemporary in aspect and classic in atmosphere, combining period architecture with modern design and artwork that pays tribute to Paris’s inimitable visual identity. It’s the rare Parisian boutique hotel that doesn’t have us grasping for nice ways to say that the rooms are small — here they’re generous enough, while the suites offer plenty of space, and some of them are improved by views of the Eiffel Tower.

Le Damantin’s spa is a particular highlight, an exquisitely calming space that feels a world away from Paris’s busy streets. Meanwhile the hotel’s kitchen and bar serve upscale contemporary French fare and inventive cocktails in the ground floor’s stylish common spaces, including a lounge, a library, and a living room. It’s this low-key yet full-service residential atmosphere that sets Le Damantin apart from the norm among Parisian hotels, and earns it a spot in our local selection.

This was like a bad date, this hotel. And whoever thinks otherwise is wrong. Or maybe it’s my bad Jewish luck (but I don’t think so). Running a hotel (or any good business) is rather a simple task, really - you just hire people who know what they are doing and who are the best in their field. But not here. There is *nothing* (and I highlight that word) what can justify a €550 average per night price tag. I would say it’s more of a €296 and a €35 spa supplement per night kind of place where they give it out to you in a voucher at some drinks quiz (the voucher). I can’t even compare it to Loro Piana in the fashion world - as with LP at least you know what you pay for - cute cashmere, it bubbles immediately but at least it kind of looks cute and fresh, but has a allure of dignity, and the ‘Old Money’, where here, this hotel was just old and tired and lost its sexual drive probably way before Brexit happened (and I can assume that was the last time the towels and bathrobes were quality checked by managers as well?). Little things: stuff left over by previous occupants (razor in a cupboard (?) and a shower cap on the bathroom floor). The hotel did try to gesture-it-out by offering us half a bottle of champagne for it… but we don’t drink alcohol, so that was useful (NOT), and so I gave it to my Parisian friends instead. The bathrobe (1 out of 2) had a ripped hole instead of a belt loop, and a missing belt loop, of course. Both bathrobes were hung on two different style hangers (one for a suit with clips, and one on a regular coat hanger, may I add both were heavily worn out on the notch sides). Both bathrobes were tired, frail on all edges and worn-out cotton. Like something you keep on to, although 25 years passed since its expiry… but that memory is so precious that you can’t let it go. The bath sheets were poor cousins of those bathrobes. Zero absorption and any hint on quality. Of course, because they are old. And that was across the hotel (not my imaginatio
