The port town of Onomichi is rich with history, as is the site on which Ryokan Onomichi Nishiyama stands — a tea house called Nishiyama Bekkan opened here in 1943, and lives on, in a way, as its materials were re-used and recycled in the construction of this 2023-vintage inn. Almost every unit is a freestanding structure unto itself, and the interiors mix classic Japanese tradition with varying amounts of Western furniture and design. The restaurant is a particular delight, featuring the cooking of chef Ken Kamo, a recipient of no less august an award than the Chevalier Order of Agricultural Merit of the Republic of France.
