Traditional Elegance & Secluded
Lilløy Lindenberg is, in a literal sense, a private island hotel, but it’s at once less extravagant and more memorable than the phrase might imply. This is no luxury resort, but a wild, rocky island in the North Sea, home to little more than a beautifully restored farmhouse and a boat launch — the latter a crucial part of the experience, as the final ten-minute stretch of your journey will take place by sea.

It’s the project of a pair of Bergen-based designers, and by all evidence, their taste is impeccable. The house’s four rooms are decorated in what they call an “antique Scandinavian folk style,” paired with judicious modern interventions as well as hand-made local crafts. Each room is as different as can be; one sits snugly under the peaked roof of the main house’s attic, while another, a free-standing unit right at the water’s edge, looks out at the waves through floor-to-ceiling windows.

Needless to say, everything you could possibly need is provided, from plant-based chef-made meals to groceries for self-catering — there’s no popping down to the shops from here. Everything is locally sourced, much of it foraged, and all of it selected with care.
