MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View

You could tie yourself in knots trying to settle the question of exactly how much the Pug Seal hotels resemble bed-and-breakfasts and how much they resemble pocket-sized boutique hotels. But what matters most about Mexico City’s inimitable Pug Seal hotels isn’t how to categorize them — quite the contrary, in fact. What matters most is that they’re so unique as to be almost uncategorizable. And though there’s a family resemblance to its siblings, Quetzalcoatl and Sentimientos, the fact remains that Pug Seal Anatole France is truly one of a kind.

It’s set in the upscale western neighborhood of Polanco, and while it’s a new build rather than a historical structure, it’s not lacking for personality — it’s the rare house in Polanco that’s painted in eye-popping Wimbledon purple and green. But once you’re inside you’ll see that the color scheme is perhaps the least extravagant thing about it. With 26 suites it’s larger than the other Pug Seals, but it never loses that residential atmosphere — provided, of course, you’re capable of feeling at home in one of the most eclectic residences you’ve ever seen. Some have balconies or terraces, some have bathtubs, one even has an outdoor jacuzzi. Safe to say it’s a stay you won’t soon forget.
