On the edge of Florence’s city center, facing the Piazza di Santa Maria Novella, a 16th-century villa has been transformed into a stylish and contemporary boutique hotel. Hotel L’Orologio — Italian for “clock” — is, rather uniquely, devoted as much to Swiss watchmaking as to Florentine architecture, with floors named for the likes of Patek Philippe and Rolex. It’s a high-end experience, to be sure, though not an entirely self-contained one; the lounge bar serves light fare all day, but beyond that you’re at the mercy of the local restaurants — no great privation, given the wealth of options beginning immediately outside.
