Contemporary Classic & Lively
Retro motels refitted into contemporary boutique hotels are one of our favorite genres in America, and we can’t say we’re disappointed to see them cropping up in Australia as well. Cabarita Beach, just outside of Gold Coast on the border between Queensland and New South Wales, is a legendary surf spot, and Halcyon House opens right onto a private section of it — if you want a taste of Australian beach life at its most stylish, this is the place to get it.

The design transformation was extraordinarily thorough; Brisbane-based designer Anna Spiro’s work approaches Wes Anderson levels of perfectionistic detail, and the elegance of Halcyon House’s interiors is more reminiscent of an upscale beach house — no two of its rooms and suites are the same — than an old drive-up motor inn. It’s luxurious, to be sure, but this being near-tropical Australia, it’s an exceedingly casual sort of luxury, and intensely relaxing to boot.

Halcyon House’s heated saltwater pool is a delight, as is the Halcyon Spa, but the most impressive element might just be Paper Daisy, the restaurant — book in advance to ensure a spot at one of the region’s most in-demand tables.
