In terms of pure distance, midcoast Maine isn’t all that far from Portland, or even Boston and New York. But it’s only now, with the advent of Rockland’s 250 Main Hotel, that contemporary boutique-style hospitality has arrived in the region. And given the local creative traditions — Rockland has long been something of an artists’ colony, and a shipbuilding town before that — it’s certainly not out of place. Its exterior is relatively modest, in keeping with the rest of the town’s visual style.

Inside, though, it’s full of art, it’s full of stylish modern furniture, and it’s marked by an industrial interior-design style that’s totally contemporary even as, in details like the lobby’s weathered ceiling slats, it pays tribute to Maine’s midcoast heritage. The rooms are proof that clean and modern can still be warm and cozy, and the uncluttered spaces are warmed by rich textures, vibrant color accents, and unique artworks. And they’re not precious about these spaces — 250 Main is pet-friendly.

Breakfast is served at the hotel, and for lunch and dinner you’ve got no shortage of local options — Rockland punches well above its weight in this department. Beyond that there’s the Farnsworth Art Museum, which counts among its collection a wealth of paintings by the Wyeth family. And if the outdoors are more your speed, you’re right on the doorstep of the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge.
