Most visitors come to Puymirol for its famous restaurant, Michel Trama, a fine dining landmark in the old walled village since 1979. But the hotel attached to the one-MICHELIN-Star establishment is just as impressive. Both are located in a 13th-century mansion that once belonged to the Count of Toulouse, and great care was taken to preserve many of its most charming features, from ancient terracotta tiles and rustic wooden beams to grand fireplaces and a spectacular staircase carved from oak. Architect and designer Jacques Garcia, known for his lavish interiors at hotels around Paris, brought his bold vision to the project, outfitting the historic country house with richly patterned rugs, antique furniture, sumptuous drapery, and heavy chandeliers.
Garcia’s taste for the Baroque is just as evident in rooms and suites. Some are cozy and romantic, with exposed beams and framed oil paintings, while others are opulent with silk taffeta canopies, velvet loveseats, gilded mirrors, and clawfoot tubs. Suites have separate living rooms, and a few have terraces. One opens directly onto a gorgeous courtyard terrace with an outdoor pool framed by chaise longues, illuminated after dark by the glow of decorative lanterns. Cooking classes are available with the restaurant’s chef, and the hiking trails and wineries just outside the village are easy excursions before returning for dinner.
