Sant'Angelo, Matera

Piazza San Pietro Caveoso, Sasso Caveoso, Matera, Italy
33 Rooms
Contemporary Classic & Quiet
There’s no place quite like Matera, the southern Italian town famous for its dwellings carved into limestone caves. The owners of Sant’Angelo have converted an entire neighborhood into a hotel, including a selection of traditional cave houses as well as a palazzo.

Rooms vary considerably depending on their setting — some bedrooms lie deep inside the caves, while others look out over the town from within the palazzo’s walls. All of them, however, are both luxurious and stylish, blending the ancient and the contemporary in classic Italian fashion. Expect sleek modern fixtures and comforts set against rough-hewn limestone walls or lovingly restored palace architecture.

You’ll find the paths and stairways around the old town square infinitely more inspiring than the corridors and lobbies of a traditional hotel. And the hotel’s restaurant, Regiacorte, is just as distinctive, housed within the cave with its arched doorways — paired, for maximum contrast, with a terrace lounge offering al fresco aperitivi and sweeping views of the landscape.
