You may not know Andrée Putman by name, but chances are you’re familiar with her work. You’ve seen her modernist aesthetic on the silver screen, and on the pages of Vogue, and inside the lobby of Morgans boutique hotel in New York. The late Parisian designer worked on film sets and hotel interiors ad campaigns for the likes of Louis Vuitton and Veuve Clicquot, to name a few highlights from her impressive resumé. But The Putman, a boutique hotel in Hong Kong, remains one of the few places where her creative vision was fully realized.
The hotel is located in the city’s busy Central District. Behind the Art Deco-style facade, there are 28 suites furnished with Putman’s custom décor, including her Crescent Moon sofa, and illuminated by her signature lighting system. (Did we mention she also designed furniture, crystal, carpets, and flatware?) The look is elegant and understated, with floor-to-ceiling windows — many rooms overlook the harbor — earth tones, and in the bathroom, hand-laid Italian tiles by Bisazza. Amenities include bed linens by Frette, standalone bathtubs by Villeroy & Boch, and rain showers by Dornbracht, and bath products by MALIN + GOETZ.
Each suite also comes with a state-of-the-art kitchen that’s cleverly hidden behind an electronic screen. At the press of a button, the screen opens, revealing a Nespresso machine and Zwilling cookware — touch the button again and it closes, concealing from view those unwashed crystal wine glasses from last night.
That’s the thing: Andrée Putman didn’t design every last thing at The Putman. But she did choose everything, and her approach was both stylish and practical. The Putman is a boutique hotel if you need it to be, and if you’re in town for longer, consider it a smart apartment building — one that conveniently includes a fitness center and housekeeping, but none of the traditional hotel services, like a lobby or concierge — that serves as a home away from home.
