Sekitei
All this and an onsen too. Just across from the shrine are the Miyahama hot springs, and when we start talking about hot springs, you know there’s a ryokan not far behind. This time is no exception: on a hillside overlooking the water (and the famous gate) is Sekitei, set amid spectacular gardens.
Here the nine rooms are actually detached villas, cascading down the terraced hillside. There’s water everywhere, from ponds to springs to plunge pools, and the style, with one foot in the ancient world and one in the modern, feels remarkably residential.
The diversions are fairly residential as well; one doesn’t visit a ryokan for the nightlife, unless your version of nightlife involves a bit of local sake and a stroll in the garden — not an unappealing prospect by any means. This is the Japanese country life we’re always going on about, at its finest — slow down and savor it a bit.
How to get there:
Sekitei is 40 minutes by car from Hiroshima or 30 minutes by train from JR Hiroshima station to Onoura and then 5 minutes by complimentary transfer.

Magical atmosphere, top service, excellent food.
Everything. This was our first experience at a Royakan and it was memorable. The setting is lovely, the room (Bashou) was fantastic, the service superb and the food excellent. We arrived at the local railway station and were met by the ‘hotel’s’ shuttle service. Once at the Ryokan, we were warmly welcomed by numerous members of kimino clad staff, quickly relieved of all luggage and items carried before being whisked to our room after being instructed as to the protocol as to removing shoes etc. It was all a bit whirlwind with an explanation given at high speed of all the facilities in the room and surroundings. We were then left in the room to take stock but were visited again almost immediately with Japanese tea etc. We did feel sligjtly shell-shocked and the excellent service was almost intrusive, but we adjusted to this over the 2 nights spent there and we departed really appreciative of the service. The meals in the room were excellent and the last night also included the attendance of the charming chef who cooked one course in front of us. Upon leaving at the end of our stay, the staff were attnetive enough to know we were going on to Osaka by bullet train and warned us that there had been an accident on the local train line into Hiroshima and said that to avoid problems the shuttle bus would take us further to ensure we got alternative transport into Hiroshima. If I could give the premises more than 5*, I would.

Amazing Japanese experience with excellent proximity to Miyajima and Hiroshima. The food Is incredible and the zen like Japanese gardens are incredibly beautiful.
