Contemporary Classic & Lively
The boom in Portuguese tourism hasn’t just meant an increase in the number of lodgings, but a flowering of diversity as well. At the small but luxurious end of things we find Tarabel Lisbon, a 19th-century house in the upscale Lapa district, with a mere nine bedrooms and an atmosphere that’s pleasingly residential — plus views that are well worth the price of admission.

Inside are interiors that feel more carefully curated than the typical hotel, even the typical luxury boutique hotel; the style is eclectic but restrained, and seems to span a multitude of eras. Claw-foot tubs and separate rain showers are universal, while higher-end rooms and suites add balconies or terraces that take advantage of the hillside setting. A lovely little pool in the garden is the extent of the leisure facilities, and rather than a public restaurant there’s a dining room where the hotel’s chef serves classic Portuguese fare, local and seasonal, accompanied by Iberian wines.
