Traditional Elegance & Quiet
In the last couple of decades Colombia has done a great deal to shed its difficult reputation, and tourism is booming once again — with perhaps no destination seeing more of a benefit than the colonial city of Cartagena. The improvements, at least as far as Tablet is concerned, come not in the form of large-scale development and an influx of mass tourism, but in a new openness to the kind of well-heeled international audience that can support something a bit more individual: an intimate, elegantly styled colonial mansion, transformed into the luxe seven-room Casa de Alba Boutique Hotel.

“Colonial” isn’t just a stylistic descriptor — this house dates back to 1560, and was one of the city’s first stone structures. The renovation that transformed it into the boutique hotel you see today was more recent — just in 2015 — but the restoration was a sensitive one, preserving the building’s historical character while updating it with modern furniture and amenities. The location, in the heart of Cartagena’s historic walled city, is as central as can be, convenient for sightseeing and revelry alike. And meanwhile, the house’s tranquil central courtyard, with its plunge pool, is the kind of low-tech comfort that its 16th-century inhabitants might equally have appreciated.
