Visiting some of the 300 or so chateaux that are dotted around the Loire Valley is one of the region’s main attractions, but Les Hayes also gives you the chance to spend the night in one. The 19th century castle has been reborn as a boutique hotel, home to 19 individually designed rooms which are split across the chateau or La Solognote, a historic property built in the region’s traditional style, and surrounded by a vast 180-hectare estate. Everyday guests can discover the French tradition of goûter, or teatime, with homemade crêpes and cakes, and the bar is open all day long from morning coffee to evening cocktails. Restaurant Le Cyprès cooks up seasonal, local cuisine from Wednesday to Sunday, and on Mondays and Tuesdays a simple set menu of homecooked hearty dishes is served around a communal rustic table for guests to dine together. By day there’s plenty of activities to choose from, and they’re all included in a stay, from forest laser games to free bike hire and astronomy nights.
