Orange, California was originally called Richland, and its newest boutique hotel borrows both its name and its stylistic inspiration from the town’s past. The Richland occupies a beautifully restored residence in Old Towne, including an original two-story wooden house, a freestanding cottage, a stylish bar and lounge, and a newly built event space, all set amid olive trees. The interiors are California cool with a vintage twist — bespoke wallpaper flecked with citrus fruit patterns, exposed beams, dark wood paneling, craftsman furniture.

Most of the Richland’s twelve rooms are located in the main house. Each is uniquely decorated in shades like sage green, deep turquoise, burnt orange, and mustard, and all have original hardwood flooring and bathrooms lined in sleek custom tile. The attic suite is particularly charming, with its high vaulted ceilings and a double-sized walk-in shower, while the cheerful cottage has its own kitchen and a bright living room done up in royal blue and canary yellow.

Apart from its rooms, the hotel functions like a members-only club, hosting frequent community happenings, from yoga retreats and pop-up events to weddings and parties. The cozy lounge, with its marble bar, U-shaped leather sofa, and retro grandfather clock, is the perfect spot for a nightcap with locals.
