Contemporary Classic & Lively
Le Corbusier’s iconic Cité radieuse isn’t just one of the world’s first (and most impressive) Brutalist structures, it’s a monument to a modernist utopia that might have been. Two of its floors are now devoted to a boutique hotel where guests live as Le Corbusier intended, while permanent residents occupy the other floors. Though the rooms are neither particularly vast nor excessively luxurious, they’re loaded with modernist character — as is Le Ventre de l’Architecte, the high-end restaurant, decorated with furnishings by the likes of Charlotte Perriand and Jean Prouvé. It’s not particularly central — a walkable downtown core wasn’t part of Le Corbusier’s vision — but it’s worth traveling for, and is close to Olympique de Marseille’s stadium complex.
