Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels — note the plural — is not just one boutique hotel, but nine of them, with eight restaurants among them, built into the eponymous Souq Waqif, in the heart of Doha, a near-century-old crossroads and open-air market. Handcrafts, traditional garments, spices and more are sold in and around buildings whose latest construction was circa 1950. After a fire in 2003, Doha authorities refurbished the classic Arabian architecture, honoring the history of the souq for the visitors yet to come. Nine of these historic buildings comprise Tivoli’s Souq Waqif Boutique hotels, each with its own unique flavor. The Bismallah, for history lovers, is one of the oldest hotels in Qatar, while the Al Najada, for architecture enthusiasts, preserves three 1930s-era homes.
