The Phoenician
There’s little trace of any pastel-shaded Southwestern kitsch; the Phoenician, despite its name, is decorated in a style that’s a pastiche of European, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influences. In the ornate marbled lobby hang crystal chandeliers, and an extensive collection of Dutch masterworks takes the place of the expected Southwestern hobbyist painting.
Guest rooms are perhaps less lavishly decorated, but no luxury is spared; the look is restrained and contemporary, with tasteful wood furnishings and lush wool carpeting. Italian linens and oversized marble bathrooms are standard in the main building, as are deep sunken tubs, large enough for two. Many have private patios or balconies with views of Camelback Mountain, and for those seeking added privacy, the Phoenician offers a number of freestanding villas, with doorstep parking and travertine fireplaces.
Golfers and tennis players will be well looked after, and the Centre for Well-Being offers everything from fitness equipment to spa treatments. The restaurant, Mary Elaine’s, is one of the best in Arizona, offering better French cuisine than you’d have a right to expect in the Desert Southwest.
How to get there:
The Phoenician is located at the base of Camelback Mountain in Scottsdale's Valley of the Sun, only 9 miles from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
