Cape Town has its share of boutique hotels, but few quite so stylish as Gorgeous George, an eclectic industrial-chic stunner right in the heart of the central business district. At 32 rooms it’s modest in size, and the twists and turns of its two Edwardian and Art Deco buildings lend themselves to a private-club vibe — as does the discreet entry, tucked away down a pedestrian street, which is easy to miss if you’re not prepared in advance.
The attention to detail in Gorgeous George’s interiors is astonishing, and South African artists and designers are showcased at every turn. In the rooms, raw concrete and exposed steel beams contrast vividly with vintage rugs and salvaged antiques, as well as modern and vintage furniture and hand-painted murals. They’re full of luxury-boutique comforts, from Nespresso machines and Marshall speakers to hypoallergenic bedding and swanky bespoke bathrooms.
Meanwhile the centerpiece of the place is Gigi, the rooftop conservatory restaurant, which bills itself as the neighborhood’s living room — though, in contrast with most living rooms, reservations are recommended. It’s a thoroughly inviting space, colorful and packed with greenery, an unusual contrast with its city-center setting.
