Minneapolis is more than a college town, and in that way it differs from many of the other Graduate hotels, each of which is typically the only boutique-style hotel to speak of in its hometown. But Minneapolis is nevertheless home to the University of Minnesota, and Graduate Minneapolis departs from its sisters in another way: it’s not just near the campus, it’s actually on campus. The former Commons Hotel is now flying the Graduate flag, and it delivers the same heady blend of retro nostalgia and contemporary boutique charm as the rest of the Graduate lineup.
Not exactly the same, of course; each one is meticulously tailored to its setting, and at Graduate Minneapolis this tailoring goes deeper than just a bit of Gophers maroon and gold. The vibe is “lake house,” as befits the Land of 10,000 Lakes, and there’s a healthy thread of outdoorsy Americana running through the décor. And it wouldn’t be Minnesota without a bit of comfort food — the fare at the Beacon tends to the gastropub side of things, and it’s unexpectedly English in accent, featuring bangers & mash where you might expect hotdish. Like the hotel itself, it does the job admirably, and with a healthy dose of personality — that, more than anything, is what counts.
