With a rich tradition of lavish traditional hospitality, India has been slower than we might have expected to embrace the high-design boutique-hotel style. There are, of course, exceptions, and the brand-new Den Bangalore is a particularly notable one. It’s a project that’s backed by the Israel-based Dan Hotels, but the Den is homegrown, built, managed, and staffed by locals. The result is an impressive luxury boutique hotel, one that feels novel and familiar at the same time, one that conveys a sense of place even as it transports guests to somewhere entirely new.
The setting is Bangalore’s upscale Whitefield district, convenient to the International Tech Park district and no end of high-tech business destinations. It’s to high-flying tech-industry travelers that the Den primarily caters, which explains the helipad on the roof, as well as the state-of-the-art electronics in the rooms and, one suspects, the cold-pressed juice bar and the games in the lounge. Two restaurants, the fine-dining Layla and the all-day Creek, see to it that everyone’s properly fueled for business or for pleasure. Hotels like this are still the exception, but the Den is proof that it’s a concept whose time has come.
