If ever there were a name that leaves no doubt as to what kind of experience a hotel is meant to evoke, it’s got to be Summercamp. The town of Oak Bluffs, on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, has a rich history as a Methodist camp destination, centering around Summercamp’s neighborhood of Wesleyan Grove. But the name’s not only a reference to the building’s history — Summercamp, in its current incarnation as a Lark hotel, is a fun and stylish hotel that aims to bring to life a modern-day, grown-up version of all of our summer-camp fantasies.
To that end, it’s perhaps the most playfully of the hotels Rachel Reider has designed for Lark, full of bright colors, graphic patterns, and mid-century design. And while you wouldn’t mistake it for a cabin in the woods it’s got just enough rustic texture to earn the Summercamp name. The rooms, at every level, are rather more luxurious than camp rooms, and the suites are downright lavish. And, just like at camp, the bulk of the action takes place outside of your sleeping quarters: in the lobby, the lounge, the game room, or the hotel’s veranda. Snacks are available in the camp canteen, and with a location in the heart of Oak Bluffs, you’re surrounded by restaurants, not to mention the beaches, the waterfront, and ample opportunity for outdoor recreation of every kind.
