MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View

It may seem a more appropriate name for a cliffside resort in the Peloponnese, but Argos finds itself in a place with classical connections of its own — Ithaca, New York, home of Cornell University. This 1831 mansion was built as a private residence, and after a meticulous renovation, it’s embarked on a new life as a hotel, with ten rooms and three suites that are classic in aspect, contemporary in style, and totally modern in comfort.

The atmosphere may be Victorian, but it’s no museum — instead it’s retro-Victorian, 2017-style. Original architectural details and restored antique chairs provide a sense of place, while modern touches like rain showers, articulated reading lamps, and well-chosen modern furnishings bring the experience up to date. Some of the larger rooms incorporate unusual layouts or exposed brick walls — no two are quite alike.

It’s also LEED certified, and features a craft-cocktail bar, Bar Argos. Beyond that you’re at the mercy of the restaurants, bars, and shops of central Ithaca — all of which is eminently accessible thanks to the Argos Inn’s location just off the end of the downtown main drag. And if you’re of an academic bent, you’ll be glad to hear it’s just across Cascadilla Gorge from the Cornell campus.
