But the Balearics are nothing if not varied, and on Menorca, in the ancient town of Ciutadella, you can get what’s practically the polar opposite experience — Divina Suites, an eight-suite boutique hotel in a 17th-century palazzo, is as tranquil a hotel as you’ll find this side of heaven itself.
It’s also, if we may venture a blasphemous opinion, rather more stylish than Paradise itself is likely to be. There’s a playfulness about the design and décor that breathes contemporary life into the old house, where vibrant colors and contemporary gestures contrast with soothing white and historical architectural details. There’s a residential aspect to the comforts, which include kitchenettes and properly usable living/dining rooms.
Among the keys to its peacefulness is its adults-only policy; breakfast is delivered to your suite every morning in a basket, relieving you of the need to pull yourself together for a public appearance. And Ciutadella is seemingly tailor-made for a quiet stroll — this town is a mosaic of distinct eras and styles, and is as picturesque as can be.
