Once a quiet tropical island off the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, Isla Holbox is now a stylish hotspot with hundreds of hotels to choose from. Only a handful are right on the beach, though — among them is Awa Holbox, a modern boutique hotel that’s a 10-minute golf cart ride from the ferry terminal. The design is contemporary, with low-rise buildings made of locally sourced wood and stone, but the hotel channels the island’s laid-back spirit: thatched-roof cabanas provide shade by the pool, fish tacos are served at wooden tables on the sand, and glowing wicker lamps illuminate the indoor-outdoor bar after dark.
All suites have private outdoor spaces facing the water. Some feature balconies with open-air tubs and elevated views over the Caribbean, while ground-level rooms open directly onto the pool deck. Inside, the look is sleek but down-to-earth, with poured concrete flooring, exposed wooden beams, gauzy white curtains, and handwoven rugs in natural hues. The master suite has its own rooftop terrace with a stone tub and a daybed ideal for afternoon siestas. For everyone else, there’s Viento, the adults-only, open-all-day rooftop bar and café, and a festive, boho-chic beach club and restaurant, family-friendly and located just steps from the crashing waves.
