Modern Design en Quiet
Among Mexican beach resorts, modern design isn’t exactly an everyday sight. But hotelier Rafael Sainz Skewes set out to challenge the thatched-roof stereotype. There’s no reason sun, sand and surf can’t comfortably coexist with clean-lined, modern concrete architecture. Here, in the seaside village of Troncones, a half hour up the coast from Zihuatanejo — a place so idyllic you’d be perfectly happy with another thatched-roof palapa — is the distinctly modernist, totally unforgettable Hotel Lo Sereno Casa de Playa.
Minimalist though it may be, it doesn’t sacrifice warmth. With just ten rooms, it feels intimate, and the surfaces, modern as they are, are left unfinished, so they feel human and handmade. The rooms are simple but complete, never ostentatious but more than comfortable enough, with private terraces and spa-like bathrooms. And a little bar and restaurant with a terrace serve as the hotel’s social hub.
It’s all delightfully low-key, and that goes for the town as well. Troncones is known to locals and surfers, but it’s far from becoming a resort. For now, thanks to Lo Sereno, it’s just a pretty little village on a beautiful Pacific Coast beach — and one with just the lightest little touch of modern, cosmopolitan design.
