If your idea of Scandinavian design is still something out of IKEA, you’re a few decades out of date. Same goes for anyone who imagines the Hamptons are all about country-club preppiness. The Maidstone, in East Hampton, will set you straight on both counts. The Maidstone is a little slice of the Stockholm archipelago, within driving distance of New York — complete with a generous helping of eclectic, contemporary Scandinavian design, as well as a restaurant whose Scandinavian-influenced cuisine just happens to be perfectly on trend at this moment in the food world.
The vibrant, varied, and always cozy look of the Maidstone is a faithful recreation of what we love about Swedish hotels, and it’s a welcome variation here in East Hampton, at the end of Long Island. The rooms, all named for Scandinavian personages, pack a lot of personality, and the cottages stick to the same highly individualized theme even as they spread out a bit. There’s no shortage of comforts — Hästens beds, another Nordic import, are always a welcome sight — and the details are well chosen, with excellent in-room coffee and tea service, to say nothing of the daily breakfast tray and the inclusion of a (very necessary) beach parking permit.
There’s plenty to do to stay active, from lawn games and ping-pong to a fleet of Kronan loaner bikes. And indoor types are cared for as well — between the library, the art collection, and the gift shop, there’s little chance you’ll exhaust the Maidstone’s interest.
