If Fazenda Nova, a 15-room hideaway in the eastern Algarve, feels more like a classic British country house than a modern Portuguese design hotel, there’s a perfectly sensible explanation: that’s exactly what its English owners intended. This lovely 19th-century house sits on an estate planted with orchards, vineyards, and vegetable gardens, all of which figure prominently in the kitchen’s cooking.
Still, you shouldn’t expect a period piece. They’ve taken some liberties with the interior, and the old house’s interiors have been updated in a clean-lined contemporary style, with Balinese beds and Hypnos mattresses, and impressively luxurious bathrooms. Garden suites are large and lavish enough, and they only get more spacious from there — and the Master Suite, with its double-sided fireplace between its bedroom and living room, is the jewel in the house’s crown.
A Cozinha, Fazenda Nova’s restaurant, serves an inventive variation of the local cuisine, relying on the region’s rich selection of seafood, as well as the estate’s own produce and olive oil and a selection of wines from the Algarve and beyond. Meanwhile a lovely salt-water swimming pool serves as the hotel’s summertime social center, while a library and a vinyl listening room provide more solitary entertainment.
