After a smart refresh, the oldest family-run hotel in Salzburg is also one of the city’s most fashionable. Hotel zum Hirschen dates back to the early 1500s, and while its pitched roof and elegant living rooms are very much a product of their time, it’s the work of contemporary designers and artists that makes the place stand out today. There’s local talent behind the newly minimalist interiors, bespoke lighting systems, and modern art collection, and the Vienna-based landscape architect Karin Standler designed the stylish central garden, where guests linger over breakfast on sunny days. Rooms are cozy and simply outfitted with king-sized beds, garden views, and walk-in rainshowers with locally produced bath amenities; a collection of larger apartments, lined in pale wood, have a distinctly Scandinavian feel. Austrian wines, coffee, and cake are served all afternoon at the lively Hirschen Bar, and bicycles are available for exploring the city.
