Phuket has more than its fair share of high-end resorts, but Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas feels especially luxurious. It’s partly the secluded location, tucked away between the Andaman Sea and a mangrove forest near the island’s northernmost point, part of the protected Sirinat National Park, and pleasantly removed from the busy port of Phuket Town. It’s also the fact that most rooms are airy Thai-style villas with private pools, and that the lagoon-like main pool stretches out along the coastline, dotted with double sunbeds elevated on platforms above the water — and that famed landscape artist Bill Bensley designed the grounds to resemble a tropical paradise with wooden catwalks leading across ponds with floating magenta lotus blooms.
Throughout the resort, the look mixes modern elegance with Thai tradition: high ceilings, rich teak furniture, crisp white linens, decorative woodwork, and pieces by local artists. Suites are relatively simple with vibrant botanical-inspired murals, floor-to-ceiling windows, kitchenettes, and private balconies, though some have multiple bedrooms or private pools. An array of villas feature perks like sunken outdoor tubs, free-standing pavilions for poolside dining, and direct beach access. Boating, diving, fishing, and various other activities are easy to access. But with so much available onsite, from a beautiful spa to yoga and Muay Thai classes, from a treehouse omakase experience to a swim-up bar and a range of sophisticated dining venues, no one would blame you for staying put.
