As Tuscan cities go Florence and Siena get a lot of attention, and deservedly so. The walled city of Lucca, however, is no slouch when it comes to picturesque Renaissance architecture, nor to phenomenal food and wine. And thanks to hotels like Palazzo Dipinto, it’s got lodgings that hold their own against just about any other Italian town you’d care to name.
And as is so often the case in Italian boutique hotels, they’ve opted for an understated, almost minimalist contemporary style — there’s no sense in attempting to outshine the palazzo’s historical charm, let alone the grandeur of the city outside. Here antique timbered ceilings and other period-correct architectural details happily coexist with neutral-toned modern Italian design furniture and the full complement of boutique-hotel conveniences — rain showers, upscale bath products, the works.
The lobby and the winter garden are both comfortable and attractive multi-purpose social spaces, while the breakfast room doubles as a bar. Beyond that, you’re at the mercy of Lucca’s restaurateurs and barkeeps. Fortunately, it’s a city that’s very much up to the task, and if you go home hungry, you’ll have some explaining to do — not least to the Palazzo Dipinto’s staff, who are quick to assist with a recommendation or a reservation.
