Modern Design en Quiet
It’s not just Portuguese tourism that’s on the ascendant, but Portuguese winemaking as well. Which means it’s the perfect time for a hotel like Herdade da Rocha Boutique. It’s set on a winemaking estate in the Alto Alentejo, the site of the Couto Saramago winery, whose vineyards and gardens are now joined by a stylish contemporary lodge. After all, there’s only so much you can learn about the land from the wine’s terroir — there’s no substitute for being there yourself.

In concept it’s not all that far from the winery hotels of Tuscany or Provence. But it’s the execution that makes the difference. No rustic farmhouse, the Herdade da Rocha lodge is a contemporary affair, a low-slung modernist complex that’s reminiscent, in a way, of the boutique resorts of the Far East. Meanwhile the interior style is contemporary as well, though perhaps a bit less boldly so than the exteriors. The heart of the lodge is the central lounge, though in the summer months the outdoor pool and terrace give it a run for its money — and the restaurant is where you’ll put all the pieces together, from the estates wines and olive oil to dishes made from the fresh produce of the Alentejo.
