Arlo Williamsburg (Formerly The Williamsburg Hotel)
North Brooklyn has grown up fast. In scarcely more than a decade it’s gone from peripheral artists’ colony to a sort of honorary Manhattan neighborhood. And no longer are we spending our evenings in Williamsburg and hopping on the L for the trip back to the hotel. Despite what its name might imply, the Williamsburg Hotel isn’t the first — but it’s a worthy addition to the neighborhood, an eight-story statement in brick, glass, and weathered steel, making the case for the east side of the river stronger than ever.
Much of the buzz centers on the nightlife, specifically the Water Tower, a glass-enclosed bar with spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline, and the Rooftop/Pool, which includes its own bar and café. Meanwhile Seven Seeds, the hotel’s Eastern Mediterranean restaurant, occupies an intimate but dramatic space off the lobby, where it serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, as well as High Tea and brunch on the weekends.
No less appealing, of course, are the guest rooms themselves, light-filled double-height spaces with furniture custom-designed by the building’s architects, Michaelis Boyd Studio. With a hint of retro modernism combined with some prewar New York textures, they’re nothing if not stylish, and with the extra space afforded by their Brooklyn location — not to mention their prime perspective on the Manhattan skyline — they don’t lack for luxury either. For hoteliers, Williamsburg is a boom town — this is your chance to get in on the ground floor (or the eighth, if you prefer).
