In a region experiencing a hard-won renaissance after decades of hardship, Vigo’s Gran Hotel Nagari is a welcome surprise — a modern hotel with all the frills promised by the five imposing stars above its entrance. The hotel’s setting is likewise emblematic of the changing face of Galicia’s business and financial capital; it’s just a few blocks from Vigo’s busy fishing port on one side and a short walk to the growing business district on the other. There’s no question which of the two inspires the hotel’s style.

In the entry-level Premium Lofts and slightly larger Demi Loft Suites, plush sheepskin rugs are about the only nod to the old Galicia; the rest is a cosmopolitan mix of inset lighting, gleaming surfaces and pared down, subtly Japanese-style décor. Black and white bathrooms, divided from the bedrooms by large glass walls, are stocked with Bulgari bath products. The Gold and Silver Master Suites are furnished with natural fabrics, luxurious silks and plenty of marble, with color schemes to match their names.

A two-story spa straddles the line between modern and futuristic. There are a few simple, tranquil treatment rooms for everything from Ayurveda to Indonesian spice therapy, but the crown jewel is the rooftop pool. It takes the form of a circuit — sort of like a smaller, not-so-lazy river — fitted with swan-neck- and volcano-shaped features, bubble beds and a series of propulsive jets. If that’s not your speed, there are a couple heated jacuzzis, and by night the rooftop converts into a bar with excellent views of the city.
