Contemporary Classic & Secluded
If you haven't heard of Equinox Resort, or you're not a Vermonter, then the name itself might strike new-age terror into your heart, conjuring visions of solstice worship and an obsessive focus on “wellness.” Put those fears to rest, though: the resort is named for Mount Equinox, and though recently renovated, is about as traditional as a resort can be.

Of course tradition and historical authenticity are New England's selling points, and on that score, Equinox doesn't disappoint. The resort comprises several historic buildings, the oldest of which, the Marsh Tavern, dates back to 1769, and was actually the first Tory property to be seized by American revolutionaries.

The hotel survived through the 1800s under a succession of owners, and was rebuilt in several different styles, hosting American presidents from Grant to Theodore Roosevelt. After a period of disuse in the 1970s, Equinox Resort is again open to the public, and despite its historic white clapboard appearance, is a thoroughly modern luxury resort.

Guest rooms are traditional New England in style, though all have been recently refurbished, and all are spacious, with the standard array of modern conveniences (air conditioning, cable TV, internet access). Service is excellent, and there are several dining options, both on the grounds and in town. But where Equinox shines is in the activities — this is less a resort than a country club with a hotel attached.

There is the award-winning Gleneagles Golf Course, named for its sister course in Scotland, as well as indoor and outdoor tennis courts. More unique are the off-road driving school, featuring Land Rovers and Hummer H2s, and the British School of Falconry with its Harris hawks. The Orvis fly-fishing and shooting schools are an option, and traditionalists may opt for the archery school. And if all this outdoor learning wears you down, there is always the Avanyu spa.

How to get there:
The Equinox Resort is approximately a 70 minute drive to Albany International Airport and 30 minutes to Rutland Airport. The hotel is also a 3 1/2 hour drive from Boston and 4 hours from either Montreal or New York City.
