A block from the Canal de Brienne, which cuts across the northwest quadrant of Toulouse, is the Hôtel de Brienne, a design hotel in the classic mode: modernist furnishings, bold colors, playful artwork, and decorative elements that tend more towards opulence than minimalism. The rooms and suites are dramatic, contrasting richly figured dark wood with white chairs and upholstery. A lounge and a garden are the extent of the social spaces; in the manner of French urban boutique hotels there’s no restaurant beyond breakfast, but the neighborhood, also in the typical French manner, proves eminently capable of keeping guests fed.
