Today Garosu-gil is one of the city’s most youthful and fashionable shopping districts, but the Hotel Anteroom Seoul takes its inspiration from an earlier era, when it was known for its modest ambitions and for the gingko trees that line the road. And though it’s unmistakably a high-design boutique hotel, it strives to create the sort of authentic person-to-person connections that were cultivated by an earlier generation of shopkeepers. It’s got one foot squarely in the modern world, of course — its chef, Jungsik Kim, earned Michelin stars in earlier efforts, and its gallery showcases the work of up-and-coming Korean artists.
