It may not be up there with Bordeaux or Tuscany in the popular imagination, but Cyprus has a long history of wine production. Situated near the northern village of Ilgaz and surrounded by majestic mountains, Gillham Vineyard Hotel makes a strong case. It’s set on the Etel wine estate, which occupies ten acres and grows eight varieties of grapes — it almost goes without saying that vineyard tours and tastings play a significant role in the hotel’s offerings.
Of course, so do the hotel’s 31 suites. Options range from the massive Presidential Sparkling Suite to the smaller (but no less luxurious) Business Room suites. All of them offer some view of the Mediterranean Sea, the vineyard, or the surrounding Kyrenia Mountains, or some combination of the three. Suites are breezy and elegant in design, with many featuring crisp white walls and linens with dramatic pitched ceilings that show off beautiful exposed wood beams.
There’s also a lovely outdoor pool, as well as a small spa with its own indoor pool. The Chef Restaurant serves upscale Israeli-accented Mediterranean fare, and the elaborate Tapas-Wine Bar features far-ranging views of the vineyards as well as occasional live music.
