Kontemporär Klassisch und Lebhaft
Helsinki’s Hotel Helka has been at it a long time — it was built by the YWCA nearly a century ago. And while it’s still owned by the YWCA, today it’s open to all, in a spirit of maximum inclusivity. It’s been reimagined as a tribute to Finnish modernist design, inspired by Alvar Aalto, whose designs furnish the guest rooms and public spaces. And it’s gone a little bit upscale in its comforts as well, without losing its approachable, accessible nature.
“Smart” rooms are compact, as were the original YWCA rooms, though these have been upgraded with Hilding Anders beds and 49-inch televisions. “Comfort” rooms extend over a bit more space, and the junior suites, set on the corners of the floors, verge on the luxurious, with extra living space and Finnish saunas attached to their bathrooms. And in all categories, artworks by contemporary Finnish artists and splashes of bright, optimistic color bring the spaces to life.
For the rest of us, there’s the public sauna on the top floor — no one has to leave Helka un-sauna’d. And while there’s no restaurant, there is a bar, featuring a menu of signature cocktails, where not just hotel guests but locals as well convene for an evening drink. It’s an impressively capable hotel for business or leisure, and a memorable one as well — which is, ultimately, what it’s all about.
Please note:
The Helka’s public saunas are closed for renovation, and are set to re-open mid-April.
