One of the great French dramatists, Pierre Corneille, regularly retreated from Paris to his sister’s home in the Norman countryside. The elegant 16th-century estate has since been converted into a luxurious boutique hotel, Les Manoirs des Portes de Deauville. Many of the property’s best assets remain intact: a collection of smartly renovated cottages frame the historic manor house with its original stone fireplace, and the surrounding park, with its old well, reflecting pond, vegetable gardens, and apple trees, is wildly picturesque.
A handful of rooms and suites are located in the main building, featuring light oak flooring, exposed wood beams, pale linen-upholstered furnishings, and modern bathrooms lined in white tile. But most are in the cottages nearby, where ground-level suites have double doors opening directly onto the garden. Across the board, the look is light and bright, with cozy throw rugs, velvet armchairs, and antique pieces adding warmth and character. A trio of private cottages offer extra space and privacy, with floating staircases connecting kitchen and living areas to the bedroom upstairs. There’s no restaurant at the hotel, though you’re unlikely to miss it with the chic village of Deauville just minutes away, and an honesty bar is open around the clock. A pretty swimming pool bordered by sun umbrellas and chaise longues invites late afternoon lounging.
