On a far-flung stretch of Mexico’s coastline where the rugged Sierra Madre mountains meet the Pacific, a pair of creative entrepreneurs founded the Modern Utopian Society of Adventurers, a design-focused hospitality project. The ambitious plans for MUSA include a real estate development with a collection of exclusive residences, but one of the first elements completed was the beachfront Hotelito at MUSA. This thirteen-room boutique hotel sets the tone for the developing community with its tropical modernist aesthetic, sustainable features, and an emphasis on indoor-outdoor living.
MUSA co-founder Andrés Saavedra handled the architecture and interior design. Rooms are airy and minimalist with polished concrete floors, handmade terrazzo tiles, and wood furnishings crafted by local artisans. Each has a private terrace with a plunge pool and an open-air rainfall shower, luxurious amenities from Smeg mini-fridges to bespoke bath products, and original artwork by Mexican artists. A few have jungle views, but most overlook the ocean, like the striking penthouse suite with its terrace facing the sunset. Other highlights include a beach club with an infinity pool and cocktail bar, an open-air gym, a naturally purified freshwater lake suitable for swimming, an on-site surf school, and a restaurant showcasing produce from the property’s organic farm.
